Der Traum vom Fliegen – wer hat ihn nicht? In 3.500m aus dem Flugzeug springen, im freien Fall den absoluten Adrenalinkick erleben und anschließend über die Landschaft schweben; das erschien auch mir sehr verlockend. Leider gibt es auf Teneriffa kein Unternehmen, das Fallschirmspringen (oder Neudeutsch: Skydiven) anbietet, daher hieß es: Ab nach Gran Canaria!

Mit der Fred Olsen Fähre bin ich früh am Morgen von Santa Cruz de Tenerife nach Agaete auf Gran Canaria gefahren. Die Überfahrt war mit einer Dauer von 1 Stunde und ein paar Minuten schneller, als ich erwartet hatte. In Agaete angekommen, gibt es dann praktischerweise einen gratis Shuttle-Bus, der einen nach Las Palmas de G.C. bringt. Von dort aus bin ich mit dem Bus zu dem kleinen Flughafen zwischen San Agustín und Berrieli gefahren, wo der von mir zuvor kontaktierte Skydive-Club ansässig ist. Die Mitarbeiter haben mich freundlich empfangen und wir haben zuerst alle Formalitäten erledigt. Ich musste unterschreiben, dass ich mir über das Risiko im Klaren bin. Da wurde es mir schon etwas mulmig, denn in einer solchen Höhe aus einem Flugzeug zu springen, hat schon etwas Verrücktes. Aber vom Springen abhalten konnte mich das nicht!

Leider mussten wir einige Zeit warten, da es genau an dem Tag sehr windig und somit zu gefährlich zum Springen war. Doch nach ein paar langen Stunden am späten Nachmittag ist auch der Wind abgeflaut und ich bekam den Anruf, dass es endlich losgeht. Schlagartig war meine Aufregung, die sich einigermaßen gelegt hatte, wieder da. Wir haben spezielle Anzüge angezogen und das Gurtzeug umbekommen. Dann habe ich meinen Sprungpartner Frank kennengelernt, ebenfalls ein Deutscher. Er hat mir alles genauestens erklärt und gezeigt. Ich fühlte mich sehr sicher und gut aufgehoben bei ihm.

Mit klopfendem Herzen ging es dann zum Flugzeug. Naja, Flugzeug wäre schon fast zuviel gesagt, mit 2 Tandempaaren und dem Piloten wurde es bereits sehr eng dadrin. In so einer kleinen Cessna zu fliegen, war für mich schon ein Erlebnis;-) Der Flug dauerte ca. 20 Minuten und wir hatten eine tolle Sicht über die gesamte Insel, den Flughafen und natürlich unsere Dropzone: die Dünen von Maspalomas. Aus der Vogelperspektive betrachtet sahen diese wunderschön aus.

Als wir unsere Flughöhe von 3.500m erreicht hatten, ging die Tür des Flugzeugs auf. Dieser Moment war am Schlimmsten, denn da wurde mir erst wirklich bewusst, dass ich mich in wenigen Augenblicken aus einem Flugzeug stürzen würde. Ich habe plötzlich Angst und Panik bekommen, doch Frank ist ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken mit mir gesprungen. Zum Glück ging es relativ schnell, sodass ich kaum Zeit zum Überlegen hatte. Und so befand ich mich auch schon im freien Fall über Gran Canaria. Was soll ich sagen – es war ein unglaubliches Gefühl! Ich kann es kaum beschreiben, jegliche Angst, die ich vor dem Sprung hatte, stellte sich als unbegründet heraus. Durch das Adrenalin im Blut möchte man einfach nur schreien und ehe man sich versieht, ist der freie Fall auch schon vorbei und der Fallschirm öffnet sich in etwa 1600m. Plötzlich ist es still, da man nicht mehr mit 50m pro Sekunde durch die Luft rast.

Weitere 3 Minuten sind wir mit geöffnetem Fallschirm über Gran Canaria geschwebt und ich konnte nun auch die Aussicht über Playa del Inglés und Maspalomas genießen. Mit dem Fallschirm haben wir noch ein paar schnelle Kreise in der Luft gedreht, wo schon wieder das Achterbahn-Gefühl bei mir aufkam. Es war unglaublich schön, aber auch etwas unwirklich, wenn man seine Beine über der Küstenlinie schweben sieht.

Leider war auch der wunderbare Gleitflug viel zu schnell vorbei und ich musste die Füße für die Landung einziehen. Mein erster Gedanke, als ich wieder festen Boden unter den Füßen hatte, war: Das war's schon, schade! Der ganze Spaß hat nur ungefähr 5 Minuten gedauert, doch es war ohne Frage eine der besten Erfahrungen meines Lebens. Skydiven ist ein absolut einzigartiges Erlebnis!

Everyone has the dream of flying, including me. Jumping out of a plane in 3500m and experience the rush of adrenaline in your body during the free fall; enjoying the beautiful landscape whilst hovering through the sky – all that seemed very attractive to me. Unfortunately there is no skydiving company on Tenerife, so I had to come over to Gran Canaria.

Early in the morning I caught the Fred Olsen ferry from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Agaete on Gran Canaria. The journey was shorter than I expected, it only took about 1 hour. After arriving in Agaete there is conveniently a free shuttle bus going to Las Palmas de G.C., from where I took another bus to the small airport between San Agustín and Berrieli. The staff from the skydive club, which I had contacted before welcomed me and at first I had to do all the paper work. I had to sign that I'm aware of the risks of skydiving. That was the first time when I felt a bit uneasy because it is indeed kind of crazy to jump out of a plane. Nevertheless: nothing could prevent me from jumping!

Unfortunately we had to wait some time as it was a windy day and therefore too dangerous to jump. After a couple of long hours in the afternoon the wind was gone and I got a phone call stating that we can finally prepare ourselves for the big jump. Suddenly the excitement, which was disappeared while I was waiting, came back. We had to wear special suits and got the harness. Then I met my tandem-partner Frank, a German as well. He showed and explained all the procedures to me and I felt very secure jumping with him.

With a beating heart I went to the plane. It was a very small plane, already filled to the rim with 2 tandem-pairs and the pilot. But even flying in such a small Cessna was very exciting for me;-) The flight lasted approximately 20 minutes. We had a great view over the island and over our drop zone: the sand dunes of Maspalomas. They are so beautiful from the bird's point of view.

As we reached our flight level of 3500m, the instructor opened the side door. This moment was horrible because then you realise that you are about to tumble out of a plane! I was freaking out and panicked a little bit but I think that is normal and thanks to Frank we just jumped without hesitating. So I didn't have the time to think about it and suddenly I was already in the free fall over Gran Canaria. And what should I say – it was absolutely incredible! It is such an awesome feeling that I can hardly describe it. Any fear I had before was unfounded, it was simply terrific. Due to the adrenaline in my blood I just wanted to scream and after 40 seconds the parachute opened in approximately 1600m. Suddenly it was very quiet, because you don't rush through the air with 50m / 1 second anymore.

Another 3 minutes we hovered over Gran Canaria with the open parachute and I could enjoy the amazing view over Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas. We did some quick circles with the parachute where I had the same feeling as in a rollercoaster. It was really beautiful but it is also kind of surreal when you see your own legs hanging over the coastline.

Unfortunately this nice flight was over too quickly and I had to lift my legs for the landing. After I stood back on the ground, my first thought was: Now it's over, what a pity! The whole jump only lasted about 5 minutes but it was clearly one of the best experiences in my life because Skydiving is such a unique and fascinating feeling!

But the festivals’ morning promised something different: instead of shining sun heavy clouds were moving across the mountains of Los Cristianos. We went around 3 pm (and without a bikini) by a crowded Guagua to Siam Park – where we realised in the long queue, that in comparison to the other festival guests we wore too many clothes. Several minutes of identity card controls, issue of advertising specialities and promo photo shootings of a well-known Canarian alcohol trademark later we stood right in the center of the big amphitheatre of the Siam Park, which was built especially for such events and has a capacity of 1.500 people. The big place and the ascending ranks filled up step by step and DJ Leon already spread good summer-mood by his songs. To upgrade that, all the heavy clouds disappeared shortly after and so there was enough space for the shining sun in the blue sky. Yearning for our short clothes, which were lying at home and accompanied by amped Canarios, the “I Love Music Festival” began.

The following hours until midnight developed as some of the best of our lives. On stage there was a coming and going of internationally known DJ artists like Bingo Players, Real el Canario and Hardwell. At 5 pm the whole amphitheatre was already filled to the rim by young, crazy Canarios who could use this opportunity to tend to three of their favourite hobbies: revealing physical culture, dancing and the shooting of funny group pictures. The vibe was perfect thanks to the shining sun, the palm trees and the music and was quite similar to the great atmosphere of the Carnival in Santa Cruz. This evening Tenerife became a serious opponent of the famous parties, we all know from reports about Ibiza or Miami.

By nightfall the beats became harder and hundreds of people were nodding, jumping and singing through the night. The sepctacular light show on stage made many eyes light up, which was one of the reasons why alomst everybody – including us - kept on their sunglasses. As a tribute to Cinderella and her dancing shoe, the big festival finished after 9 hours of dancing at midnight with a firework display of paper streamers. The amped crowd continued being on the loose and spread in all directions to keep on partying in other clubs. We also tried the “After-Festival-Partying” in San Telmo, but quit quite rapidly as the atmosphere of the “I Love Music” has been way too unique. So, after a long day with hurting feet and reduced hearing we went to bed to dream of our next adventure on the Canaries… - of course we’ll keep you up to date ;-).

Der Festivalmorgen versprach hingegen das genaue Gegenteil: statt strahlendem Sonnenschein schoben sich große Wolkentürme über die Berge rund um Los Cristianos. So ging es gegen 3 Uhr nachmittags (und entgegen der Planung ohne Bikini) im gut gefüllten Guagua auf zum Siam Park - um dort in der meterlangen Warteschlange festzustellen, dass wir im Vergleich zu den anderen Festivalgästen zu viele Klamotten an hatten. Wenige Minuten voller Ausweiskontrolle, Promo-Artikel-Ausgabe und Werbefotos einer hiesigen Alkoholmarke später standen wir inmitten des Amphitheaters, welches der Park extra für derartige Veranstaltungen bereit hält und 1.500 Menschen fasst. Der große Platz und die aufsteigenden Ränge füllten sich allmählich und DJ Leon verbreitete mit seinen Songs bereits gute Sommerlaune. Um das Ganze noch auf die Spitze zu treiben, verzogen sich zudem auch kurz darauf die grauen Regenwolken und schufen Platz für blauen Himmel und natürlich Sonne. Mit Sehnsucht nach den kurzen Klamotten, die wohl behütet zu Hause lagen und in Gesellschaft aufgedrehter Canarios begann es also, das “I Love Music Festival”.

Die folgenden Stunden bis Mitternacht entwickelten sich dann zu einigen der besten unseres Lebens. Die teilweise sogar international bekannten DJ Artists wie die Bingo Players, Real el Canario und Hardwell gaben sich im Laufe des Abends an den Mischpulten sprichwörtlich die Klinke in die Hand. Bereits gegen 5 Uhr nachmittags war das Amphitheater prall gefüllt mit jungen, feierwütigen Canarios, die bei dieser Gelgenheit gleich drei ihrer Hobbies nachgehen konnten: freizügige Körperkultur, Tanzen und das Schießen witziger Gruppenfotos. Die Stimmung war dank Sonnenschein, Palmen und guter Musik genial, ähnelte an Ausgelassenheit sogar sehr der Atmosphäre vom Karneval in Santa Cruz. Teneriffa wurde an diesem Abend zur ernsthaften Konkurrenz für die berühmten Parties, die man sonst nur von Berichten über Ibiza, Miami oder aus der (äußerst) fragwürdigen Fernsehserie “X-Diaries” kennt.        

Mit Einbruch der Dunkelheit wurden die Beats zunehmend härter und hunderte Menschen nickten, sprangen und sangen sich in die Nacht. Die spektakuläre Lightshow über der Bühne brachte Augen zum Strahlen und war wohl einer der Gründe, dass der Großteil – inklusive wir natürlich – die Sonnenbrille einfach gleich aufbehielt. In Hommage an das liebe Aschenputtel und seinen Tanzschuh war nach 9 Stunden Dauertanzen das Festival dann gegen Mitternacht mit einem großen Papierschlangen-Feuerwerk leider schon beendet. Die vollkommen aufgedrehte Menge amüsierte sich weiter und strömte in alle Richtungen davon, um im kleinen Stil in anderen Clubs weiter zu feiern. Auch wir versuchten uns im “After-Festival-Partytreiben” in San Telmo, gaben jedoch schnell auf, denn die Atmosphäre des “I Love Music” war einfach zu genial gewesen. So gingen wir nach einem langen Tag mit schmerzenden Füßen und vermindertem Hörvermögen glücklich ins Bett, um uns für die nächsten Abenteuer auf den Kanaren auszuschlafen... – wir halten Euch natürlich auf dem Laufenden ;-).
