Frequently asked questions

Which requirements do I have to fulfil?

You are aged between 18 and 32 years, ideally student. You are a citizen of the EU or Switzerland. You speak English. Knowledge of Spanish is an advantage. You have to contract an accident-, third party- and health insurance for your stay abroad.

Do I receive any payment during my internship?

Yes, you will receive free board (three meals daily in the staff canteen) and accommodation (in the hotel or an apartment nearby). Our partner hotels pay pocket money of at least €150 per month.

Can I apply for a hotel placement, if I don't speak Spanish?

Yes, but – if your Spanish is non-existent or basic it's a good idea to do a 4 to 8 week intensive Spanish preparation course in Spain. With improved Spanish skills it will be easier to start your internship on the right foot and to communicate with your colleagues. Additionally, placements in certain departments require at least a basic knowledge of Spanish.

What is a good duration for the placement?

Internships which last between 3 to 6 months are preferrable. Hotels prefer long-term periods. s-w-e-p is, however, able to arrange internships shorter than 3 months.

When and how should I apply?

You should apply as soon as possible. That guarantees you the ideal placement position. Your application should coincide with a deposit at least 2 to 3 months before your placement starts. Of course, s-w-e-p does its best to arrange placement on short notice as well. Just send us your CV in English or Spanish with your photo via e-mail.

When can I expect the placement confirmation from the hotel?

We receive the placement conformation from the management of our partner hotels within 2 to 3 weeks and will inform you about it immediately. Then you can look forward to starting your work placement on the Canaries and begin your travel preperations. s-w-e-p tries to conclude all formalities as soon as possible to the benefit of all parties involved.

When and how to book my flights?

You should book your flights after you received your placement confirmation. On Tenerife there are two airports. Most international flights arrive or take off from the southern airport - called Reina Sofia. Here you can start browsing.

How many hours a week do I have to work? Do I have holidays?

You will work 40 hours a week and have two days off, which needn't be consecutive. The head of your department will inform you about your daily schedule. In some departments the daily schedule can be divided or you will work in shifts. There is no entitlement to holidays for interns in Spain.

Can I claim a single room in the hotel during my internship?

No, there's no guarantee that you'll have a single room. The hotel decides, which room interns will inhabit and how many people will share this room. Hotels can allocate one room to at least to two interns/hotel employees (same sex). Nevertheless, interns often get a single room.
